Boar’s Head to Host 2013 USTA/Virginia Jr. Team Tennis District Championships

Boar’s Head Sports Club, in Charlottesville, has been selected to host the 2013 USTA/Virginia Jr. Team Tennis District Championships the weekend of August 2-4. The District Championships is one of the largest annual USTA junior tennis events in Virginia.

"The Boar's Head is honored to host one of the largest junior tennis events in Virginia,” says Jacek Wolicki, Director of Tennis at Boar’s Head Sports Club. “We look forward to providing our local players and their families with exposure to the best tennis Virginia has to offer at the junior level. The experience will benefit Boar's Head and the whole community."

Boar’s Head Sports Club boasts 26 total tennis courts; 10 Har-Tru; four outdoor DecoTurf and 12 indoor DecoTurf. The JTT Championships will use eight indoor hard courts and four outdoor hard courts.

The March 2012 issue of Tennis Magazine named The Boar’s Head as the number one tennis resort in the Mid-Atlantic, and one of the top 50 in the United States.

Earning such regional and national distinction is nothing new to The Boar’s Head, having received the 2008 Private Facility of the Year award from Racquet Sports Industry Magazine as well as being named one of the top 75 tennis resorts in the world by TennisResorts.com.

The Boar’s Head is also the home courts of the University of Virginia’s nationally ranked men’s and women’s teams, and hosts annual USTA Pro Circuit tournaments.

The 2013 JTT District Championships will bring winners of local leagues from across the state, showcasing some of the top junior talent in Virginia. Tournament champions and finalists earn advancement to the USTA/Mid-Atlantic Sectional Championships in August where they will face the top teams from Maryland, Washington, D.C., and West Virginia. Winners from Sectionals advance to the National Championships.

Last spring was the first season that the Charlottesville local league advanced teams to the JTT Championships, with Boar’s Head earning District titles in the 10 and Under Intermediate and Advanced divisions.

"The spring JTT not only provided juniors in the Boar's Head program with valuable playing experience but also taught them valuable lessons in team work, sportsmanship, and camaraderie,” says Wolicki. “For many of our juniors, competition in a team format was a catalyst that really got them excited about tennis."

Jason Grigg, the Director of Tennis at ACAC Charlottesville and President of the Charlottesville Area Tennis Association (CATA), mentioned “CATA is very excited about the opportunity to help host one of the largest junior events in Virginia. As Jr. Team Tennis participation continues to grow, we are looking forward to having several of our local kids in the event.”

Patrick Kearns, Charlottesville’s local league JTT coordinator, added “USTA Jr. Team Tennis is a great way to excite young kids about the game of tennis and to teach kids how fun it is to play within a team environment. Having the chance to host the District Championships in Charlottesville at the Boar’s Head Sports Club gives our local tennis community the opportunity to reach kids of all levels and abilities.”

JTT brings kids together on teams to play singles, doubles and mixed doubles.
